Sprinkler system floods part of Chisholm High School
The Chisholm High School band and fitness rooms flooded Sunday after a sprinkler system went off in the two rooms.
“We had about 4 to 5 inches of standing water in the two rooms,” said Superintendent Janey Blanchard, who added the district would be working with an insurance agent beginning Monday.
The Chisholm Police and Fire departments responded to the scene after a passerby had noticed water coming out from under a door to the school, which is located downtown at 301 Fourth St. SW.
Blanchard called the damage “considerable,” describing cased instruments on the floor of the band room, and a fitness area replete with soaked equipment.
The band already has played its holiday concert and will move its practices to another part of the building. The fitness center has been closed for the week and a representative from 2nd Wind Exercise Equipment is being brought in to assess the affected apparatuses.
Additionally, the school’s resource officer is looking at security tapes to determine what may have caused the sprinkler to go off, Blanchard said.
It’s not uncommon for youth basketball teams to be in the building on a Sunday, she said. Also, there was a fire alarm active in another part of the building earlier in the day, shortly after noon, “but we don’t know if it’s related,” Blanchard said.
