Four indicted for meth conspiracy on Red Cliff
Four people have been indicted on charges related to the distribution of methamphetamine on the Red Cliff Reservation.
A federal grand jury returned indictments on May 30 against Tyrone Butterfield, 39, and Simon Sayers, 42, both of Bayfield, and mother-and-son duo Rita Witter, 68, of Fremont, Calif., and Ryan Witter, 35, of Two Rivers, Wis., with conspiring to distribute methamphetamine and to possess methamphetamine with intent to distribute, the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa announced Tuesday. The indictments allege that the four operated from June 2017 to May 18.
The charges are the result of a joint investigation by the Red Cliff Tribal Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Drug Enforcement Administration in Madison and Fremont, Calif., the Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office, the Ashland Police Department and the Fremont Police Department.
Red Cliff Chairman Rick Peterson thanked law enforcement for their work to make the arrests possible.
“This investigation was a well-coordinated multi-agency effort which sends a strong message to those who selfishly seek to destroy our people by bringing drugs into our community. That message is simple: We are going to use every tool and resource we have at our disposal in stopping you,” Peterson said in a statement.
