• Lightning, hail and several tornado sightings were part of the turbulent weather yesterday in the Northland. Several lightning strikes caused damage to houses in Duluth, baseball-size hailstones broke windows in Virginia, and tornadoes were sighted in both Bayfield and Sawyer counties.

• Duluth's fireworks, cancelled a second time yesterday by weather, have been rescheduled for today near the Arena-Auditorium on the waterfront. The original Independence Day show was called off because of fog over the Twin Ports.

• The Duluth School Board voted 7-2 this week to create a new district-level position of director of computer technology. The new director will plan and direct computer and technology use throughout the district and will supervise about ten technology-related positions.

• More than 600 dancers and 10,000 spectators are expected on the Lac Courtes Oreilles Reservation near Hayward this weekend for the 24th annual Honor the Earth Powwow. This year's powwow is dedicated to the memory of William Sutton, who died at 88 in 1994.
