Duluth Vaxjo Sister City Soccer Exchange Program
Players participating in the Duluth Vaxjo Sister City Soccer Exchange Program returned from their trip to Vaxjo, Sweden, in early July. Vaxjo is Duluth's Swedish sister city.
The Soccer Exchange Program, which has been going strong for almost 20 years, consists of four teams of U15 and U16 boys and girls from both Duluth and Vaxjo. The Duluth teams are made up of players from Duluth, Hermantown, Proctor, Esko, Cloquet and Superior. Players enter the Program when they are 15 and are matched with other 15-year-old players from Vaxjo. The matches remain together during the player's 2-year program participation. Each summer Duluth and Vaxjo alternate hosting the Sister City Soccer Cup. The visiting player lives with the family of his or her counterpart during the exchange.
This year the Duluth teams traveled to Vaxjo to stay with their host families. Players experienced home life in Sweden including attending Sweden's Mid-Summerfest celebration. In addition, the program provides opportunities for players to take side trips to other areas of Sweden.
During the final weekend of the group's stay, the teams participated in the Sister City Soccer Cup in which the Duluth teams competed against their host player's team along with other competitive teams from the Vaxjo area.
Through participation in the program the players experience the culture of another country, while Registration is open for the 2018-19 season for players born in 2003 (U15 players). A maximum of 16 players per team (one girls team, one boys team) is allowed. Applicants should have some competitive soccer experience. DVSE offers fundraising opportunities to offset the cost of the trip. Go to www.sistercitysoccer.org or email email@example.com for more information.
